Chianti<\/strong>, famous for the vineyards from which the area\u2019s world-famous wine is made, is a succession of charming hilly landscapes straddling the provinces of\u00a0Florence and\u00a0Siena<\/strong>,\u00a0Arezzo<\/strong>\u00a0and the\u00a0Colli Pisani<\/strong>.
Always considered the\u00a0‘heart of Tuscany<\/strong>‘, it is ‘inhabited’ by rows of vines, oaks and holm oaks, chestnut woods and medieval villages where time seems to stand still. In every village you\u2019re more than likely to come across wine\u00a0cellars, castles, fortresses, parish churches, country houses, farms<\/strong>\u00a0and characteristic\u00a0wine shops<\/strong>. The views are rewarding. Framed by the silvery colour of the olive trees, the perfect geometry of the vines<\/strong>, the country lanes bordered by cypress trees<\/strong>, the fields of broom<\/strong> at the foot of the woods, they feature striking landscapes that have been photographed and printed on postcards and calendars sent all over the world, inviting everyone to explore this paradise. It is no coincidence that this land is referred to as ‘Chiantishire<\/strong>‘, or the county of Chianti, because of the large number of foreigners, not only English, who reside here permanently. Every season is a good time to visit this area, which is an ideal destination for\u00a0cultural trips, making a dream of love come true<\/strong>\u00a0and organising<\/strong>\u00a0any kind of\u00a0event<\/strong>. Spring and autumn are the best times, when the landscape looks characteristically Tuscan, the climate is mild and the countryside blossoms in all its beauty. In summer, this is the right place to relax. In autumn, festivals and events linked to the local traditions, history and culture of wine and good food liven up the villages and towns. In ancient times, Chianti was more mountainous than hilly: rich in woodland, water and game, it was not easily accessible, due to its location on the outskirts of the area linked by the main communication routes, an aspect that partly protected it from the great barbarian invasions after the fall of the Roman Empire. From the Middle Ages to the Renaissance, this land was often a\u00a0battleground<\/strong>, fiercely contested by the Communes of Siena and Florence. After the wars ended, some valleys were cleared and used for agriculture. Its name can be attributed to the municipalities of\u00a0Gaiole<\/strong>, Radda<\/strong> and Castellina<\/strong>\u00a0(known as \u201cin Chianti\u201d), territories that formed the ancient \u201cFlorentine Military League of Chianti<\/strong>\u201d, whose emblem was the\u00a0Gallo Nero or Black Cockerel<\/strong>. Today, partly as a result of the law on the designation of wines, the municipalities of\u00a0San Casciano<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Tavernelle<\/strong>\u00a0in Val di Pesa,\u00a0Greve<\/strong>, and part of\u00a0Barberino in Val d’Elsa<\/strong>, as well as the Sienese municipalities of\u00a0Castelnuovo Berardenga<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Poggibonsi<\/strong>, also bear the “Chianti” DOCG label.\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t

Departing from\u00a0Florence<\/strong>,\u00a0the gateway to the Chianti hills is\u00a0Impruneta<\/strong>\u00a0whose most famous monuments are the crenelated 13th century bell tower and the\u00a0Basilica of Santa Maria<\/strong>. Heading towards Siena, a must-see attraction is the ancient medieval village of\u00a0Greve in Chianti<\/strong>\u00a0(towered over by the\u00a0Castle of Montefioralle<\/strong>) with its unique triangular square overlooked by palaces, porticoes and loggias, all converging towards the\u00a0Church of Santa Croce<\/strong>.
Not far away, we come across\u00a0Volpaia<\/strong> a picturesque medieval village, and\u00a0Radda<\/strong>, built near the 14th-century\u00a0Church of San Nicol\u00f2<\/strong>\u00a0and the majestic Palazzo Pretorio dating from around 1415. Continuing our journey, we come to\u00a0Gaiole<\/strong>, which affords one of the most famous panoramas in Italy, and hosts countless farms and castles, including\u00a0San Leonino<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0Fonterutoli<\/strong>. After passing Siena, we come across the 13th-century\u00a0town of Monteriggioni<\/strong> built on the top of a hill and surrounded by imposing walls, Castellina<\/strong> a Sienese outpost of Etruscan origin with its central square crossed by Via delle Volte, of medieval origin; and finally,\u00a0Poggibonsi<\/strong>\u00a0where every year, in autumn, the ancient grape-pressing activity<\/strong>\u00a0is revived in the hilly areas, and\u00a0Montespertoli<\/strong>. It is impossible not to mention the\u00a0Badia a Passignano<\/strong>, the beautiful and ancient seat of the Lega del Chianti, and the\u00a0Castle of Brolio<\/strong>,\u00a0the former residence of the Grand Baron Ricasoli, the father of modern winemaking. In the Chianti region, gastronomy is synonymous with quality, the identity of the territory, working with the products of the land, unique flavours; it stands out for its\u00a0simple and natural ingredients<\/strong>\u00a0and for its\u00a0respect for traditions<\/strong>. The star of the region\u2019s starters is the bread with which the famous “Panzanella<\/strong>” dish is made, rich in tomato, onion, basil and cucumber, not to mention “Fettunta<\/strong>“, when it is drizzled with fresh olive oil, and sprinkled with garlic, pepper and salt. Olive oil is the king of the table, bringing with it all the freshness of the hills. But the Tuscan dish par excellence<\/em> is “Ribollita<\/strong>“, a soup made with bread, cabbage, beans, spinach, tomatoes, stale bread, and pork rinds, all mixed with olive oil and seasoned with pepper and salt.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t
